MCP tool: `calculate_sip`

See what a monthly SIP grows to with a yearly step-up, a lump sum and inflation, on a live chart, or find the monthly SIP a goal needs.

Move a slider and the chart redraws at once. Add a yearly step-up as your salary grows, a lump sum you already have, and inflation, so you see the final value in today's money too. Or flip to goal mode and get the monthly SIP that reaches a target.

## What it does

- Live chart of invested amount and returns, year by year, with the value in today's money.
- Annual step-up: raise the SIP by a fixed percent every year.
- Goal mode: the monthly amount needed to reach a target by a chosen year.
- Shows what the step-up adds and what starting five years later would cost.
- Share a plan by link or download the year-by-year table as CSV. Nothing is stored.

## How it works

1. Enter the monthly amount, expected return and duration, or drag the sliders.
2. Optionally add a yearly step-up, a lump sum and inflation.
3. Read the final value and chart, or switch to goal mode to work backwards from a target.

## Questions

**How is the SIP value calculated?**

Each instalment is paid at the start of the month and the annual return compounds monthly, at one twelfth of the yearly rate. 10,000 a month for 10 years at 12 percent grows to about 23.2 lakh from 12 lakh invested, the same figure most fund calculators show.

**What is a step-up SIP?**

A SIP that rises by a fixed percent once a year, usually in line with salary. A 10 percent step-up on 10,000 means 11,000 a month in year two and 12,100 in year three.

**Why show the value in today's money?**

Prices rise, so a crore in 20 years buys much less than a crore today. The value in today's money divides the final amount by inflation for each year, which is the fairer number to plan a goal with.

**Are returns guaranteed?**

No. The expected return is an assumption. Equity funds swing year to year, so treat the result as a range to plan around, not a promise.

**How much SIP do I need to reach 1 crore?**

At an expected 12 percent a year, about 43,000 a month for 10 years, 19,800 for 15 years, 10,000 for 20 years or 5,300 for 25 years. With a 10 percent yearly step-up, the 15-year plan starts at about 11,500 a month instead. Each extra five years roughly halves the monthly amount, so starting early matters more than the exact figure. Use goal mode with your own return and duration; at a lower return the amount needed rises quickly.

**Is a SIP or a lump sum better?**

At the same steady return a lump sum ends higher, because all the money is invested from day one: 12 lakh invested once at 12 percent for 10 years grows to about 39.6 lakh, against about 23.2 lakh from 10,000 a month over the same 10 years. Real returns are not steady, though. A SIP buys more units when prices fall, spreads the risk of investing everything just before a drop, and fits money that arrives each month from a salary. To compare on this page, enter the lump sum and set the monthly investment to 0.
